Dulcitone is a deeply sampled instrument, presented exactly as it was captured during a real analogue recording session. Dulcitone was recorded in a rich boutique recording space through an entirely analogue signal path built from some of the most respected microphones, desks, and outboard ever made.
The instrument itself has real age and personality. It hasn’t been over-restored, and you can hear the mark of time in it. That lived-in character is complemented by the vintage nature of the microphones and consoles used to capture it, resulting in a sound that feels warm, clear, and deeply physical — less like a sample library, and more like sitting in on the session itself.
TRAILER
Analogue excellence
This dulcitone wasn’t captured to be polished or redesigned. It was recorded as a real session, with the aim of preserving the instrument’s natural behaviour, weight, and response in the room.
Multiple microphone perspectives were chosen not to offer variation for its own sake, but to reveal different sides of the instrument; from focused and immediate, to weighty, coloured, and spatial. Some paths are clean and open, others lean into character, committing to tone in the same way you would during a session rather than shaping it later.
Analogue character
A close dynamic microphone routed through analogue compression brings out impact and edge, while a true vintage large-diaphragm condenser offers a more open, classic perspective. Vintage and modern microphones were routed through classic analogue desks and outboard only where they genuinely contributed to the sound.
Nothing was processed for effect. Every decision was made in service of realism, depth, and feel.

INTERFACE
The dulcitone was recorded through multiple, clearly defined microphone paths, each presented in the instrument exactly as it was captured. These specific microphones are labelled accordingly in the interface.
C42 stereo pair Forms the foundation of the instrument. Open, balanced, and naturally wide, it offers a clear and honest representation of the dulcitone and is a good place to start when getting to know the sound.
U87 stereo pair Routed through a classic Fairchild compressor, provides a softer and more rounded character. This path introduces gentle density and movement, lending itself well to more intimate or blended parts.
C12 mono Presents a detailed and present mono image with clarity and focus.
U47 mono Set back slightly and configured in omni, captures a more traditional studio perspective, bringing weight, air, and a sense of the room into a single, characterful channel.
SM57 mono Placed beneath the dulcitone, driven harder into analogue compression delivers a more coloured, assertive tone — useful when edge, impact, or a less polite sound is desired.
Schoeps V4Us stereo pair Set back in the room to capture the space itself, allowing depth and ambience to be blended in naturally rather than added artificially.
All signals were routed through classic analogue desks and outboard, including Neve and SSL consoles, committing tone on the way in rather than shaping it later. The result is a collection of microphone paths that already feel musical and intentional before any further mixing.
Attack, Release, Reverb and Delay offer simple but powerful sound-shaping controls.
Action Switch between two playing responses.
Natural – reflects the original feel and behaviour of the instrument.
Tight – offers a more controlled and consistent response for modern performance.
Restore Smooths out some of the dulcitone’s more prominent mechanical artefacts, evening the response while preserving the instrument’s core tone and character. Use sparingly when a cleaner, more predictable presentation is needed.
